About The WomenShelter of Long Beach


WomenShelter of Long Beach

We are the oldest agency in Long Beach serving victims of domestic violence.   Since 1977, we have helped our clients overcome their own hurts and move on to a healthy and productive life for themselves and their children.

  

Purpose:         

The mission of WomenShelter of Long Beach is to help end the cycle of domestic violence through education, intervention and prevention.  WomenShelter seeks to assist victims and their children to transition to a secure, permanent living situation free from the trauma of violence by providing safe shelter and supportive services to victims of family abuse.

 

 

Established:   

 WomenShelter of Long Beach has been serving the community since 1977.

 

Programs /     

w 24-Hour Crisis Line: Trained counselors/advocates respond to crisis calls,  
     information/referral calls and calls from law enforcement.

Services:            

w Emergency Shelter – An eight-bedroom, 29-bed facility that provides 30-45
     days of safe,  emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children.

                       

w Domestic Violence Resource Center – Located at 930 Pacific Avenue in Long   
     Beach, the Center offers non-sheltered victims a variety of services, including 
     counseling, legal advocacy, case management, group counseling, social services
     and emergency food and clothing.

 

w DART (Domestic Abuse Response Team) – In cooperation with the Long Beach
     Police Department, WomenShelter of Long Beach responds to law enforcement
     calls at the scene of domestic violence incidents.

Impact:            

w   WomenShelter of Long Beach generally runs at full capacity year-round
     sheltering approximately 120 women and 150 children.

 

w The 24-Hour Crisis Line responds to approximately 3,000 calls annually.

 

w The Domestic Violence Resource Center assists approximately 250 families per
      year.

 

w DART counselors respond to approximately 15 calls per month.

 WomenShelter of Long Beach

Clients:           

The client population of both the Shelter and Resource Center is primarily urban poor.  Many are immigrant women who do not speak English.  Approximately 50 percent are Hispanic, 35 percent African American and 15 percent Caucasian. Each year, WomenShelter provides service to 50 new and 200 ongoing Khmer speaking clients.

Staff:               

WomenShelter of Long Beach employs 40 full- and part-time staff, including counselors, a licensed clinician, and an executive director.

 

 

Volunteers:    

Volunteers are used in many areas of the organization but mainly serve to fill clerical and administrative positions.  Those volunteers who complete the 40-hour, state-mandated training, offered three times per year, can be used in direct client contact including crisis line, working in the children’s center, co-facilitating groups and other direct service functions.

Funding:        

WomenShelter of Long Beach has received more than 90 percent of operational funds from government sources including the County of Los Angeles, State of California and City of Long Beach.  With recent budget cuts, the facility is depending more on individual and group contributions, private grants, and fund-raising events.
