Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2018
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)
Each day, the lives of millions of women, men, children, and members of the LGBTQ community are affected by domestic violence.
- Women in the United States experience assaults and/or physical beatings every nine seconds.
- One in four men has been a victim of physical violence by an intimate partner.
- Each year, 5 million children witness domestic violence.
- Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.
- Domestic violence occurs in one out of four to one out of three same-sex relationships.
Domestic violence affects everyone regardless of age, gender identification, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, etc.
Domestic violence is the great equalizer and goes beyond black eyes and physical harm – it includes threats, humiliation, isolation, financial abuse, and much more. These forms of violence are occurring in our communities every day. Nearly three out of four individuals personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence victims/survivors are our family, friends, loved ones, and neighbors. It is clear that domestic violence is not only a family issue, but a community issue: it is estimated that here in the United States a total of $8.3 billion are spent annually as a direct result of domestic violence. The time to take a stand is now. Support victims/survivors, speak out, and lead with love all month long to increase awareness regarding domestic violence and to foster healthier, safer communities for us to call home.
