Holiday Recap 2020

2020 has been like no other year in our lifetime. This holiday season was fraught with emotion, grief, and loss, and was doubly difficult because we missed our usual means of support and the comfort of gathering with friends and family that are vital to our holiday traditions. However, thanks to an outpouring of support from generous donors like you, we were able to come together for the 2020 holiday season to sponsor families in need, surprise children with holiday gifts, and provide gift cards to purchase necessities. In fact, 140 families were sponsored, 198 children received gifts from their wish lists, 113 gift cards for Thanksgiving dinners were provided to families, and individuals and local organizations held 27 drives to support WSLB. Amazing!!

As we look back over 2020, we are proud that, as an essential business, WomenShelter of Long Beach was able to remain open throughout the pandemic and continue to provide much-needed, lifesaving, supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Our wonderful staff have all gone above and beyond to ensure the health and safety of those we serve including our residents in Cherese’s Safe Home and the many adults and children who receive services through our Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC). The way that we provide some of our programs now does not quite look the same as it did, but we have made sure that those who need our help are able to get our help!
We are all in this together!

Since 1977, WSLB has remained committed to its mission: to eliminate domestic violence through compassionate intervention, education, and personal empowerment. Thank you all for helping us work toward the elimination of domestic violence.

As we adjust to the New Year, we wish you moments of peace, the warmth of memories from holidays past, and delightful glimpses of the joy that lives on in 2021.

With sincere gratitude,

Mary Ellen Mitchell

WSLB Executive Director

What a Memorable WSLB Holiday Season!

Thank you to everyone who supported our 2020 holiday Sponsor-A-Family Program! Your selfless involvement allowed many families and children at WSLB to enjoy an extra special holiday season this year. Every year, WSLB is incredibly grateful and thankful for the continued outpour of involvement and care from generous donors, supporters, and The Gazette Newspaper.

To our donors:

We made it to the end of 2020 and what a journey it has been. We know that for many of us this year proved to be a rough one and we wanted to let you know how thankful we are of our supportive community who has continued to care for one another during these difficult times. We deeply appreciate each of you and are so happy that you exist. May the magic and wonder of the holidays stay with you throughout the New Year!

To the Gazette and its readers:

On behalf of WSLB, we extend a warm thank you for your continued support. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide 113 gift cards for families to purchase Thanksgiving meals and we received over $27,000 in donations!

Year after year, the Grunion Gazette and their readers go above and beyond for survivors and victims who seek aid, and we are once again overwhelmed with joy and appreciation for all the support we received this year. WSLB could not do what we do without the generous support of the Long Beach community.
